Caring for Your New Cutting Board
So, you've bought your first butcher block cutting board. Now you want to make sure it lasts. I've got some great tips on how you can keep you cutting board lasting from this generation to the next.
At Dawn's Depot, we sell only heirloom quality products, made in the USA by manufacturers who have been making cutting boards and products for over 100 years. That said, even these high-quality, long-lasting, and sturdy boards need some TLC to have the long life they should have for you and your family!
After every use, wipe your cutting board with a dry cloth.
The board can be cleaned and sanitized with a spray of diluted bleach water and a damp cloth. Any excess water should be wiped off with a dry paper towel.
If the cutting board was used to cut something messy, the board can be washed in a sink with a scrub cloth, soap, and water. Use a paper towel to dry it off immediately.
Never allow a cutting board to be immersed in water for any period of time. The wood grains will absorb the water and expand, but the glue joints will not. The absorption and drying process will gradually weaken the glue bonds and destroy your cutting board.
About once a month, your cutting board should be treated with Emmet’s Elixir! Emmet’s is a proprietary formula of mineral oil and other natural oils with antimicrobial properties that will keep your cutting board saturated with oil instead of water. The oil helps seal the wood and prevent water absorption from occurring.
With these tips, you can expect your cutting board to last a lifetime, and beyond.
